National Settlement Depository (NSD) has become the first Russian company certified to two software quality standards (CMMI for Development and CMMI for Services). CMMI Institute, a division of Carnegie Mellon University (USA) involved in the development of the CMMI standard, has assigned to NSD the third level of maturity of software products and services provided with the use of corporate software.

Sergey Putyatinskiy, IT Director, NSD, said: “NSD is now gradually evolving into a major technological company. Around 90% of NSD’s investments are investments in its own software and platforms. The implementation of the CMMI processing model allows us to create products timely and to increase the existing systems’ resiliency given the rapid extension of the scope of software development which now amounts to hundreds of thousands of man days per year at NSD. CMMI helps us to control the quality and terms of implementation of platforms with different architectures, which are a technological basis for the most complicated systems such as collateral management, the corporate actions center, the repository, settlement, payment, depository, back office, information and other NSD’s services.”

In 1988, the Software Engineering Institute (USA) developed the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) standard to increase the processing maturity of organizations involved in software development. It is based on principles similar to ISO 9000-9001, however, unlike this standard, CMMI contains some certain recommendations regarding processes for development of software products and provision of services with the use of corporate software. Since the moment of its creation, the standard has been regularly upgraded with due regard to newest software development approaches. For instance, in 2008, Agile practices were added to the standard.

More than 5,000 organizations hold CMMI certificates; they include major financial, technological and IT companies, such as Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Bank of China, Postbank Direkt, Luxoft, EPAM, Accenture, Huawei, Tech Machindra, as well as software divisions of NASA, Boeing and Bombardier.
